( *** Changed YT video to a better one. *** )

Have you ever been asked "If you study mathematics then you must know a lot about fractals, right?" Wrong. Unfortunately. I have learned that understanding fractals requires -at least- knowledge of Complex Analysis ( M337 ). A student of mathematics must be patient.

Last week's mathematical news was of course the death of Benoit Mandelbrot. The magazine Math Factor published a video-lecture ( 20 min ) of him recorded February, 2010. On that page I also found this video of the Mandelbox.

  1. Yes and if you look at Falconer's book (recomended for the MSc Course) you also need a good grasp of measure theory and topology. Not a trivial subject at all despite the relative ease in which you can code a program to generate a Mandelbrot set.

Its seven episodes were broadcast by ARD beginning September 17, 1966. The series has since acquired cult status in Germany. Broadcast six years before Star Trek first aired in West Germany (in 1972), it became a huge success.)
